Sophie Steadman is a Cumbrian artist, whose recent artwork (‘Destroying as Process’), is based upon the re-investment process and investigation into artmaking itself, through the act of destroying and rebuilding.
Sophie experiments with the element of control, and the interest lies in this act of taking the time to carry out a process and to reconstruct something for the same result, or until it becomes illegible. This often involves creating a piece of work, and then destroying it, to re-assemble it. It is the loop of creation that provides a means for experimentation, and questioning how much control an artist has over their own work.
As well as being an artist, Sophie is also a co-director of a Cumbria based Community Interest Company, ‘SoMo Creation’. SoMo aims to promote and provide art related opportunities in Cumbria and surrounding areas.
