About
Mollie Balshaw is a contemporary artist whose practice explores the possibilities of painting in the expanded field. Working with abstraction, objecthood, and materiality, their work challenges traditional structures of painting, interrogating its surfaces, supports, and historical legacies. Through deconstruction and reconfiguration, Mollie uses painting to navigate a non-binary position, offering a visual language that resists categorisation and embraces ambiguity.
As a non-binary artist, Mollie’s practice sits at the intersection of personal identity and broader artistic discourse, critically engaging with the gendered histories of painting and their implications today. Their work asks where voices like theirs can sit within the canon — and how new ground can be carved out from within it.
Alongside their artistic practice, Mollie is Co-director of Short Supply, an artist-led initiative and curatorial collective supporting emerging artists across the North of England. Through this role, they advocate for accessible, inclusive spaces in contemporary art and contribute to a wider culture of care, experimentation, and equity in the creative industries.
